Brain Jonestown Massacre

The Northern Byron Bay

Wednesday the 6th June

The US psych-rock legends Brian Jonestown Massacre were back in Australia once again to promote the release of their new album “Something Else”. With a career spanning almost 30 years, it’s always going to be a gamble as to what front man Anton Newcombe and co are going to bring to the audience.

The support act for the night is “Nice Biscuit” a six piece from Brisbane who delivered an energetic set of songs.   Fronted by two female vocalists with matching outfits reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra, Billie & Grace sang beautiful harmonies to a psychedelic soundtrack. I was totally mesmerised and recommend you check this band out.

Anton Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre walk out one band member at a time and take their position on the stage. Anton walks on last, arranges sheets on a lectern and tunes his guitar.   He’s  wearing a white t-shirt emblazoned with “Eat Shit.   The band launch straight into BJM classics which got the crowd pushing forward and swaying to the psychedelic reverb drenched guitars and rhythmic tambourine played by the super cool Joel Gion with the mightiest mutton chops and dark sunglasses.

The band delivered an incredible set including songs from their new album “Something Else. The new songs including “Hold That Thought “slide in seamlessly alongside fan favourites like “Anemone” ,“That Girl Suicide” and “Pish”.  It was a solid performance from BJM that had the audience mesmerised and swaying their arms in a trance like state and proved the band have still got it after performing together for all these years.
